The period since the emergence of humans on the planet has displayed an ongoing Bio-Diversity reduction and an accompanying loss of genetic diversity. Named the Holocene extinction, the reduction is caused primarily by human impacts, particularly habitat destruction. It is in everyone's interest that we try to minimise or reverse this trend, wherever and whenever possible.
A simple project to help the Eco System by enhancing Bio-Diversity is to increase plant life and provide sources of water in your community. Some planters and a small pond in a back garden can be very effective at bringing back animals, birds and insects that are currently in danger of declining to a point where they are almost all but lost to areas, areas where they were once common.
It has been a personal quest of mine for several years now to improve the environment, when I can. One project was to increase plant life and supply a source of water in my own back garden to try to help bring back wildlife there. The following photographs are a record of the increased Bio-Diversity over the past 5yrs or so. Enjoy as I have.
Bio-Diversity
As well as the addition of a water source I further developed the area by planting up with flowering plants that were particularly appealing to insects such as Bees and Butterflies. I also put in some berry plants and fruit trees that have helped the birds in particular in the vicinity of my garden, enjoy a more varied diet. There is of course an added benefit to myself in this as there is often a surplus of berries and fruits available to me, now that the plants have established themselves. These benefits can bee seen below.
